Petronas’ Gentari and Singapore’s Sembcorp Collaborate on Low Carbon Energy Solutions

August 2023

Gentari, Petronas’s renewable energy division, has teamed up with Singapore’s Sembcorp Industries to foster collaborations in the clean energy realm, with a spotlight on low-carbon hydrogen. The partnership will focus on the provision of low-carbon hydrogen, which includes establishing hydrogen production facilities and conducting collaborative research on transporting hydrogen from Malaysia to Singapore.

Both companies are looking to leverage their combined expertise to develop sustainable solutions in the hydrogen sector. They will also delve into research around trading renewable energy within Southeast Asia and other designated areas, aiming to expedite the adoption of clean energy. Sembcorp Industries’ CEO for Singapore and Southeast Asia, Koh Chiap Khiong, highlighted the growth potential of Malaysia’s renewable sector, with Sembcorp itself having a sizeable 17.9-gigawatt energy portfolio, of which 11 GW is from renewable sources.

Meanwhile Gentari chief renewables officer, Low Kian Min, sees the partnership with Sembcorp as a catalyst for a boom in hydrogen and renewable energy projects. The partners further seek to accelerate Southeast Asia’s energy transition in the direction of a more sustainable, low-carbon trajectory.
