Indonesian and Korean Research Agencies Collaborate on Sustainable Smart Greenhouses

April 2025

Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) has entered a strategic partnership with the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) and the Korea Invention Promotion Association (KIPA) to develop a Sustainable Smart Greenhouse (SSGH) in Indonesia. Formalized through an agreement signed in March 2024 at BRIN’s Thamrin Building, the collaboration marks a significant step toward advancing agricultural technology through research and innovation. The 2,000 m² smart greenhouse will be constructed in BRIN’s Soekarno Science and Technology Area in Bogor to enhance national food security and contribute to the country’s sustainable development goals.

KIST is a prominent South Korean research institution dedicated to advancing technology and innovation across multiple sectors, including agriculture, energy, and health. Renowned for its strong track record in applying research to address global challenges, KIST plays a vital role in scientific and technological progress. Complementing this effort, KIPA supports innovation by promoting the development of technology and patents while also facilitating the protection of intellectual property rights—domestically and in collaboration with international partners.

The agreement encompasses several key areas, including research and technology development, researcher exchange programs, and the implementation of joint projects scheduled to continue through 2027. As part of the collaboration, BRIN was awarded a Smart Greenhouse (SGH) grant covering approximately 2,000 square meters to be constructed within the Soekarno Science and Technology Area in Bogor.

The construction of the SSGH is expected to take approximately six months, with completion targeted for mid-2025. The official handover of the project, documented through the Handing Over Minutes (BAST), is scheduled for June 2025, followed by a warranty and operational maintenance period extending through to June 2027.
