Metro Pacific Water (MPW) has begun construction on the Metro Iloilo Desalination Facility, set to be the largest desalination plant in the Philippines. The USD 95.9 million project aims to address the growing demand for clean water in Iloilo by converting 66.5 million liters of seawater into potable water daily.
A groundbreaking ceremony was held on February 21 in Barangay Ingore, La Paz, attended by Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas, Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Jr., MPIC Chairman Manuel Pangilinan, and Department of the Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla.
Once operational, the plant will serve more than 400,000 residents, using advanced reverse osmosis technology to provide a reliable water supply, even during droughts or periods of low rainfall. The project is expected to reduce reliance on traditional freshwater sources such as rivers and groundwater, ensuring a more sustainable water infrastructure for the city.
The facility is a joint initiative between MPW, French water solutions provider SUEZ, and local construction firm Jemco. MPW, a subsidiary of Metro Pacific Investments Corp. (MPIC), specializes in water and wastewater infrastructure outside Metro Manila. SUEZ will oversee construction and operations, while Jemco will contribute to the project’s development.
